Desde 1953, (e a partir de 1955 anualmente) o Hugo Awards premia o melhor livro de Ficção Científica ou Fantasia, de cada ano, publicado em inglês no ano anterior. O formato do troféu muda a cada ano, mas mantendo uma referência ao foguete cromado, do troféu original desenhado por Jack McKnight e Ben Jason, a partir de um ornamento comum para automóveis da década de 50.

Atualmente cabe ao World Science Fiction Society, a organização do prêmio. A WSFS também é  responsável pelas famosas convenções de FC e Fantasia (Worldcon), que ocorrem pelo mundo.

O processo de votação se dá da seguinte forma:

Entre Janeiro e Março, os participantes da Worldcon daquele ano (que pagam algo em torno de 50 dólares para participar), escolhem cinco pessoas ou trabalhos de destaque no ano anterior, distribuidas pelas 15 categorias. Aproximadamente mais de 500 indicados ao todo.

Em Abril é divulgada a lista dos finalistas (os cinco mais votados) de cada categoria, e a cédula para votação é enviada para os membros da WSDS daquele ano. Por volta de Julho (dependendo da época da Worldcon) sai o resultado, e é feita uma cerimônia para entrega dos troféus.

Embora não exista prêmio em dinheiro, receber um Hugo, além do prestígio, impulsiona as vendas e promove o autor mundialmente.


 

Na tabela a seguir, os anos correspondem ao ano da cerimônia, ao invés de quando o romance foi publicado. Nomes com o fundo azul e um asterisco (*) são os vencedores; aqueles com o fundo branco são os outros indicados.
